Italy: Von der Leyen promises EU's financial support for floods victims in Emilia Romagna
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, visited Emilia-Romagna region on Thursday, after last week floods devastated the area.
During a press conference with Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, von der Leyen promised EU's financial support for those affected by the floods.
“I've seen the land devastated, so for many, many farmers, it is a disaster. Therefore, the agricultural emergency fund has to be triggered. That's point number one. But then, indeed, the solidarity fund, I think, is appropriate to support here,” said the EC president.
Meloni also thanked Von der Leyen for her visit, saying that “it's great that the President was here and she could realise of the extent of the devastation by herself, that actually affected the region, and the many problems that we will have to face.”
The flooding affecting the region of Emilia-Romagna claimed at least 14 lives last week.
