Poland: 'I am grateful to you for believing in us' - Ukraine's parliament speaker Stefanchuk addresses Polish lawmakers in Warsaw
Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk thanked Polish lawmakers for their support during an address to the parliament in Warsaw on Thursday.
"The one and a half thousand kilometres of active front line that Ukraine maintains today is a bloody scar on the flesh of Europe. Like all our other wounds, it will not heal quickly,” Stefanchuk said.
“I am grateful to you for believing in us, in our victory, which will also be a victory for Poland and the whole free world," he continued.
Stefanchuk went on to commend Warsaw for its efforts in creating a 'tank coalition' and protecting Ukrainian skies with its MIG fighter jets.
“We will never forget Poland's leadership in creating a tank coalition, because it was you who gave us the first Leopards. The Ukrainian skies are protected by Polish MIGs,” the Ukrainian parliament speaker said.
“We believe that an aircraft coalition will soon be formed, in which Poland will take a leading place," he added.
Finally, Stefanchuk offered his condolences to the descendants of Polish victims killed during the Volhynia massacre, ahead of the 80th anniversary of the killings.
“We understand your pain from the loss of your loved ones. To all the families and descendants of the victims of the then events in Volyn,” he told the parliament.
“I express my sincere sympathy and gratitude for preserving the bright memory of my ancestors."
Tens of thousands of Poles are believed to have been killed by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) during the Volhynia massacre, which took place from 1943 to 1945.
