More than 500 peasants from the Lleida region of Catalonia marched through central Barcelona on Wednesday to draw attention to the severe drought affecting the region.
Footage shows activists marching through the streets with the banner 'Let's save what we eat, without peasants, ranchers or agro-industry there is no country'.
The protesters marched through the city centre and stopped outside the Spanish government's office in Catalonia, where they held a meeting with a government delegation, talking about the serious consequences of the lack of water for crops.
The activists prepared a letter for the European Commission and also brought politicians a box of apples as a symbol of the last crop that was harvested in the fields of Lleida last year.
The protesters demanded immediate help from the authorities, to close canals and improve water management.
Another of the goals of the protest was to warn the population that a shortage of local agricultural products could lead to a significant increase in food prices.
The severe drought that Spain has been experiencing since last summer is also threatening the global olive oil supply, causing prices to spike around the world.
Spain is requesting emergency funds from the European Union to support farmers and ranchers amid extreme drought conditions in the agricultural regions.
