Turkey: Anti-migration leader Ozdag backs Erdogan's rival Kilicdaroglu in upcoming presidential runoff
Umit Ozdag, the leader of Turkey's anti-migration Victory Party, announced his support for opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the upcoming presidential runoff vote, during a press conference held in Ankara on Wednesday.
“We came together, we sat down, we talked, our staffs came together, we sat down and talked again. Beautiful results were obtained,” Kilicdaroglu said.
Ozdag added that “Turkey's most important problem is undoubtedly the repatriation of 13 million asylum seekers and fugitives living in our country”, calling for his backers to “support the policies and politicians who will send 13 million refugees to their homeland in the election to be held on May 28 and vote for Kemal Kilicdaroglu.”
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also obtained high-profile endorsements in recent days, including Sinan Ogan who was placed third with just over five percent of the vote in the first round.
Turkish voters will head to the polls for the runoff on Sunday, after the first round ended inconclusively, with no candidate meeting the 50 percent threshold to win outright.
Erdogan received 49.5 percent of the vote, while Kilicdaroglu received some 44.9 percent.
