Russia: DefMin shares footage of destroyed equipment from 'reconnaissance-sabotage group' in Belgorod region
Russian Ministry of Defence published footage of destroyed military equipment in the Belgorod region on Tuesday. Earlier, the ministry reported that it has tackled and destroyed a 'Ukrainian sabotage-reconnaissance' group, which had attacked the territory of the region a day earlier.
Footage shows a body laying on the ground, damaged armoured vehicles with traces of shells, as well as a burned-out pickup truck with the inscription 'For Bakhmut' on it.
Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported on Monday that 'a sabotage and reconnaissance group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces entered the territory of the Grayvoronsky district'. He added that a 'counter-terrorist operation' had started and that 'most of the population has left the territory'. On Tuesday, the governor said that residents were located at places of temporary residence in other seven districts of the region, and one civilian died.
The so-called 'Freedom of Russia Legion' took responsibility for the attack on the Russian territory, claiming that they had launched an assault together with the 'Russian Volunteer Corps' on the village of Grayvoron in the Belgorod region, as reported on their Telegram channel.
On Tuesday, Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov claimed that 'in the course of the counter-terrorist operation, as a result of air strikes, artillery fire and active action by the units of the Western Military District that covered the state border, the nationalist formations have been blocked and destroyed.'
"The remaining nationalists were pushed back into Ukraine, where they continued to be hit until they have been completely eliminated. The enemy losses were over 70 Ukrainian terrorists, four armoured fighting vehicles and five pickup trucks," Konashenkov said.
Advisor to the Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office Mykhailo Podolyak said that Kiev was 'not directly related' to the events on the border in his Twitter account.
"Ukraine is watching the events in Russia's Belgorod region with interest and is studying the situation, but is not directly involved in it. As you know, tanks are sold in any Russian military store, and the underground partisan units are composed of Russian citizens after all," Podolyak said.
The US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller during a press conference held in Washington DC on Monday said that Washington does not 'enable or encourage attacks outside Ukrainians' borders', but leaves it to Kiev to decide 'how they want to conduct their military operations'.
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
