Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was greeted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, ahead of talks in Beijing on Friday.

Footage shows the two leaders shaking hands, as well as seated alongside their respective delegations in the meeting room.

Ahead of the talks, Sanchez said the meeting would include discussions of the 'global crisis' caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as well as opportunities for tourism ahead of a bilateral summit this summer.

Meanwhile, Chinese Premier Li Qiang told China Central Television (CCTV) that Beijing was keen to increase trade and investment with the country.

Spain is due to assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union later this year. Sanchez is also the first European leader to meet with Xi since the Chinese president’s talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

China put forward a 12-point 'position on a political solution to the Ukraine crisis' in February, including the rejection of the Cold War mentality, the cessation of hostilities, and the resumption of direct dialogue between Russia and Ukraine.

During his talks with Xi, Putin claimed that it could lay the foundations for an agreement, but only 'when the West and Kiev are ready for it'.

Ukraine and its Western allies had a mixed reaction, with President Volodymyr Zelensky saying that some of the points 'coincide with the interests of the world' but that he could not agree with others.
