Locals and visitors in Washington DC flocked to parks as cherry blossoms reached their peak.

Footage filmed on Sunday features cherry trees in full bloom at the National Mall near the Washington Monument. Visitors can be seen taking pictures and picnicking under the trees. Families could also be seen bringing their dogs and children to the park.

Tokyo mayor gifted 3,000 original cherry trees to Washington DC in 1912. Tidal Basin is also the place where Former first lady of the US Helen Herron Taft and Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese Ambassador, planted the first two trees together.

According to the National Park Service, Washington's cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin reached their peak. The peak happens when 70 per cent of cherry buds are flowering.

Due to the impact of climate change and the consequent rise in temperatures, the average date of the peak bloom has reportedly shifted from April 5 to March 31 since the 1920s.
