Israel: Thousands protest against judicial overhaul in Tel Aviv after Netanyahu fires Defense Minister
Thousands of protesters demonstrated against the government's judicial overhaul on Monday, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Footage shows protesters waving Israeli flags and chanting slogans as they voiced their opposition to the reform.
The protest comes after Netanyahu's parliament coalition passed the first in a series of laws that are part of the reform earlier in the week, protecting him from being removed from his post. In a televised address, the Prime Minister vowed to overcome the divisions over the reform plans in the country, a speech that was rejected by his opponents.
In a separate address, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant called to halt the judicial overhaul legislation to hold talks with its opponents. Netanyahu fired Gallant on the following day.
The Prime Minister says the judicial overhaul is aimed at giving 'the right balance between the three branches' of government, while critics say that the changes give politicians too much power over the Supreme Court.
