Firefighters extinguish flames in aftermath of apparent strike on multi-storey building in Zaporozhye
Footage captured on Wednesday shows firefighters extinguishing flames in two multi-storey buildings in Zaporozhye after reports of a strike on the area.
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, a rocket hit between two nine-storey buildings, killing one person and injuring 32, with 27 - including three children - requiring hospital treatment. Five others were reportedly treated at the scene.
"Right now, residential areas where ordinary people and children live are being fired at", Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Twitter. "Russia is shelling the city with bestial savagery," he added via his Facebook page.
The Ukrainian President also posted a video of what he claimed was a strike on a residential building in Zaporozhye, on his Telegram channel on Wednesday.
The footage shows an explosion in the lower floors of the block, as well as a cloud of smoke following the blast.
At the time of publication, the Russian side had not officially commented on the video or the claims. Moscow has repeatedly claimed that its forces do not target civilians or civilian infrastructure.
Zaporozhye is one of four regions, also including the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and Kherson, that President Vladimir Putin agreed to allow to join the Russian Federation, signing accession documents on September 30, 2022.
According to Moscow, it followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia.
Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
