Hundreds of people from around the world flocked to Tokyo’s Ueno Park as the world famous Hanami season arrived in Japan, as seen in footage captured on Wednesday.

Footage shows large crowds enjoying the freshly blooming flowers, taking pictures and sitting under the cherry blossom trees with friends.

'Hanami' represents the Japanese tradition of enjoying the blooming phase of flowers, especially the blossom of cherry and plum trees.

The tradition is believed to have taken root in the East Asian country about 1,200 years ago.

This year’s Hanami season is expected to be busier than usual, as picnics and parties under the cherry blossom trees are now permitted for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
