France: Fierce clashes erupt in Paris as pension reform protests continue

French police were seen clashing with protesters in Paris following the continuing demonstration against the government’s pension reforms, on Tuesday.

Footage features protesters chanting, waving flags, setting off fireworks and throwing projectiles. Fires were seen burning in the street, while police officers used tear gas and made an arrest, as they attempted to disperse crowds and control the protests.

On Monday, the French government earlier survived two no-confidence motions, following its decision to use executive powers to force through pension changes, raising the retirement age from 62 to 64, without a vote last week.

The first vote was initiated by the 'LIOT' parliamentary group and fell just nine votes short of the required 287. The second motion, proposed by the right-wing National Rally, garnered only 94 votes.

Hundreds of protesters have reportedly been arrested throughout France. On March 20, 234 people were reportedly detained in Paris following clashes with riot police.
