France: Railway workers invade tracks during protest against pension reform
Dozens of workers affiliated with the CGT trade union invaded the railway tracks of the Versailles Chantiers train station on Monday, in protest against the Macron government’s pension reform.
Footage shows protesters chanting and waving red flags on the tracks amid clouds of smoke.
According to local media, the protest was attended by members of the CGT federations of railway workers and commerce. The demonstrators reportedly placed firecrackers on the tracks and sabotaged the brakes on trains, disrupting several lines.
Protests continued across France after the government chose to use executive powers to pass the reforms on Thursday, raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 without a vote in the National Assembly.
Later in the day, the government narrowly survived a no-confidence motion, following the use of the parliamentary override.
