Colourful parade sees Tunisians celebrate 'National Day of Traditional Dress' in style

The Tunisians celebrated one of the most important components of their intangible cultural heritage, the traditional dress, on Sunday.

Thousands could be seen parading on the streets of the capital, waving flags, drumming, singing, and dancing in traditional clothes. As an important component of the national identity and symbol of the culture, arts, crafts, and skills inherited by generations, the culture of clothing, accumulated over time, producing a living renewable heritage.

It is the "Tunisian Kharja", the national day of traditional dress, organised by the Turathuna Association, which attracted great vitality to the ancient city of Tunis. The participants of the celebration wore traditional costumes, including "Safsari", "Mariul Fadila", "Shashia", "Farmala", "Balgha", "Fofta" and "Al-Barnos", in a festive atmosphere and chanted Sufi chants in the streets.

"Today is the birthday of the Tunisian Kharaja. Today celebrates the National Day of Traditional Dress. We submitted a request to the United Nations, UNESCO, so that it becomes a global day for traditional dress and identity. Preserving material heritage is a global duty that we must preserve", said Zain Al-Abidin Al-Harith, founder of Our Heritage Association.

The initiative is organised and supported by the authorities and civil society, aiming to promote traditional costumes and the historical heritage that is preserved in the popular memory.
