Youth activists marked the anniversary of Crimea's accession to Russia during an event dubbed 'We have been together for 9 years' at the republic's natural landmark Belaya Skala, on Saturday.

Drone and ground footage shows young people setting fire to smoke pots in Russian colours and unfurling the country's flag.

"The reunification of Crimea with Russia is a symbol of the return of Russian lands, a symbol of the birth of a new world order based on justice and mutual respect. Happy holiday, friends!", said Head of the Republic of Crimea Sergei Aksyonov as he congratulated the residents of the peninsula on Saturday.

A general vote on the status and statehood of the peninsula was held in the region on March 16, 2014. As a result of the referendum on March 18, Russia recognised Crimea and Sevastopol as subjects of the Russian Federation.

Celebrations marking the ninth anniversary of Crimea's reunification with Russia took place in various Russian cities on Saturday.
