Germany: Hundreds of anti-war protesters march against arms deliveries to Ukraine in Berlin
Hundreds took to the streets in Berlin on Saturday in protest over the Ukraine conflict and the government's arms deliveries to the country.
Protesters carried signs reading slogans such as "You don't defend freedom with war", "Peace now! Without weapons!", and "Diplomats instead of grenades", among others, as they demanded peace negotiations in the Ukraine conflict. The demonstration was met by counter-protests and a police presence was deployed to prevent the event from escalating.
Speaking at an interview, one protester said "They must negotiate diplomatically, they must negotiate honestly with compromises from both sides. That is the case if you want peace. You do not send weapons in this case to kill people. People are being killed any moment here - well, not here, but there, with the weapons that are being funded here. And I am ashamed of that."
Another demonstrator added "Russia has de-facto occupied large parts of East Ukraine at the moment, and they will not retreat voluntarily from there. If arms supplies continue to happen however, the war will be prolonged by months or a year even. According to information I have, 300,000 people died - 150,000 on each side."
According to local media, various alliances had called for the demonstration, including the party "Die Basis", with no incidents reported at the time of writing.
