Cyclone Yaku wreaked havoc in the Chaclacayo district of Lima province, killing several people and causing floods and landslides that destroyed many homes and schools on Friday.

Footage shows people putting sandbags in front of a school gate to protect it from the flood, while others try to remove the mud.

"The perimeter fence has been lost on both sides. An incredible amount of mud has entered due to the mudslide," said Maria del Pilar Serrano, Director of the Felipe Santiago Estenos School.

Fredy Vilca, Deputy Director of Mariscal Ramon Castilla School explained the massive damage caused by mudslides saying, "The damage has been horrible, the classrooms, I repeat, the patios are full of mud.

According to Peruvian president Dina Bolurate during the period from January 1 to March 14, as many as 8,000 people had lost their homes, 50,000 were affected, 50 died and 48 were injured, also, 1,000 homes were destroyed and 1,800 had become uninhabitable.

A state of emergency has been declared in many districts of Metropolitan Lima.
