USA: 'We didn't want to be famous' - New Order talk frankly at 'Beyond the Music' festival launch
Members of British rock band New Order discussed fame, their career and modern music at the launch of a new festival 'Beyond the Music' in their native Manchester, at the SXSW convention in Texas on Thursday.
New Order, created by former members of Joy Division after the death of singer Ian Curtis in 1980, attended the event in Austin, Texas, announcing their role as ambassadors for the festival and sharing anecdotes with fans.
"I had a terrible time with the education system, I hated school. I was repressed," said Bernard Sumner, one of the members. "We weren't anti-music, we didn't do it for reasons of fame, didn't want to be famous. I didn't care about that at all", added the vocalist.
"I wanted to be in a band since I was at school and I didn't see many female guitar players, so I thought I'd do it. And I enjoyed it," recalled Gillian Gilbert, keyboardist for New Order.
According to local press, 'Beyond Music' is described as a 'co-operative' and 'the first festival and conference that has integrated a decision-making structure to create action, and exist as more than just a talking shop'.
Oli Wilson, founder of 'Beyond the Music', said it marked a pivotal moment in history of the music industry in Manchester. The festival will take place on 11-14 October 2023.
