Workers took the the streets of Paris in the latest round of nationwide strike action against the government’s planned pension reform, as seen in footage on Wednesday.

Footage shows demonstrators gathering with flags and banners, and marching through the city.

Trade unions called the protest, the eighth since the changes to retirement age were announced, with rail workers, garbage collectors and public transport staff all taking part, among other sectors.

It came on the same day a parliamentary committee was due to scrutinise the bill, ahead of a vote which was expected as early as Thursday.

The government says the plans to increase the retirement age from 62 to 64 are needed to address the deficit in the system caused by an ageing population. The unions claim the protests will continue until the changes are withdrawn.
