Residents of Tehran celebrated Chaharshanbe Suri on Tuesday ahead of the Persian New Year's eve celebrations with bonfires and fireworks.

City residents performed traditional celebration rituals in the streets during nighttime, such as jumping over bonfires, setting off fireworks or lighting sky lanterns.

According to the Tehran Emergency Center, 7 people were killed and 147 were injured during the festival, mostly due to explosions of incendiary materials.

"There was a tradition that women and girls did it with spoons in the bowl. They hit the bowl with a spoon so the people at home give them something and put it in the bowl. It could be anything including edibles. Now, this tradition is often performed in Yazd. In Tehran, people often do a bonfire and celebrated around it", explained Mahtab Khouzouei, a local.

Chaharshanbe Suri is reportedly also celebrated annually in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and by Kurds and Azerbaijanis in Turkey, Iraq, and Syria.
