British actress Tilda Swinton sat down for an interview at the 2023 SXSW Conference And Festival in Austin, Texas on Monday, ahead of the premiere of her new film 'Problemista'.

While speaking at the Austin Convention Center, the legendary actress discussed the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema and hailed the success of ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, which took home seven Oscars the night before.

"For the Oscars to be good for cinema is not always the case. Sometimes the Oscars aren't particularly good for big cinema. You know, it's a bit of a crap shoot isn't it?” Swinton explained.

“This morning, I feel like it's 'new balls', you know, it's a new game, and those of us who are really interested in big cinema and believe that it's good for people, have kind of better, you know, we've got a bit of air today."

Swinton went on to state that cinema had faced different challenges during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, explaining that there was a danger that people would forget about the magic of cinema while locked down at home. However, the actress claimed that the opposite happened.

“Yeah, it was a concern. But, then this magical thing happened,” Swinton said. “You know, if you ask anybody, not just cine-nerds like us, what they really missed during the pandemic and they said the same things. They said friends, family, live music and cinema."

Tilda Swinton is premiering her latest film ‘Problemista’ at the SXSW festival. The film is the directorial debut of Julio Torres, who stars as an immigrant toy designer in New York City.
