Dozens of majestically decorated elephants wearing traditional costumes marched the streets in Parippally, Kerala, on Sunday, marking Parippally Gajamela.

Over 50 animals embellished with gold harnesses and decorative bells participated in the procession, competing in a pageant on the tenth day of the festival. The procession was accompanied by hundreds of worshippers who observed traditional rituals in tribute to the goddess Bhadrakali. According to popular belief the elephants, a holy animal symbolising the deity Ganesha, should be offered gifts to satisfy the deity in order to bring prosperity to the community and fulfil the worshippers' wishes.

Paripally Gajamela is celebrated in the framework of the annual Kodimoottil Sri Bhadrakaali Temple festival between February and March.
