'War and Peace' performance is being rehearsed in the Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after A. Solovyanenko in cooperation with the Kremlin Ballet.

On Saturday, artistic director of the theatre, Vadim Pisarev, shared his impression of the upcoming event’s importance in the modern time amid military conflict.

"In Donetsk, the theme of war and peace is very relevant. And Leo Tolstoy seems to have written this work about the war today. There is love and childbirth, there is jealousy and betrayal - all these human relationships exist during war," he said.

Vadim Pisarev also emphasised the unique origin of this theatrical production claiming it to be 'a discovery in the musical world'. He added the theatre troupe has already visited Moscow for rehearsals.

"We've already been to the Kremlin and presented the first act which is very solid, it is 21 scenes. And by March 24, we'll go for the second act," Pisarev stated.

Deputy Prime Minister of the DPR Larisa Tolstykina previously reported the project of the Donbass Opera House was supported by the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives. The premiere is scheduled for the autumn.

The Donetsk People's Republic is one of four regions, also including the Lugansk People's Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye, that President Vladimir Putin agreed to allow to join the Russian Federation, signing accession documents on September 30, 2022.

According to Moscow, it followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia. Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
