Emergency crews and rescue forces from the municipality of Tehran held a joint air rescue exercise with a hypothetical scenario of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Tehran, on Thursday

The exercise took place around 08:00 local time (04:30 GMT) at reportedly 16 different sites in Tehran including airports, and hospitals in the capital with six helicopters, four fixed-wing aircraft, three drones and with the cooperation of 20 organisations.

The drill concentrated on practices such as transporting injured by helicopters, transporting rescuers by helicopters, training with cargo hooks and transporting equipment and extinguishing the fire.

The drill was conducted in part due to concerns a similar quake that devastated Syria and Turkey could hit the Iranian capital.

Tehran is known as one of the most populous cities in Iran packed with high-rise commercial and residential buildings. The last earthquake in Tehran occurred 190 years ago.
