America’s favourite pet! Dog tortured by Mexican drug cartel runs as a candidate for pet contest
Lemon Pie (Pay de Limon) is one of the candidates to win this year’s America’s Favorite Pet contest.
The 13-year-old dog, who was tortured by the Zetas cartel in Zacatecas when it was just one year old, had his paws cut. Now, he lives at the 'Milagros Caninos' dog shelter in Mexico City accompanied by many other pets, as shown in footage recorded in the city on Tuesday.
"The story of Lemon Pie impresses with its example of resilience, its example of rebounding, of effort, of not holding a grudge against anyone," said Patricia Ruiz, founder of Milagros Caninos Dog Sanctuary.
Ruiz mentioned that, just like Lemon Pie, the shelter welcomes animals in extreme situations, including blind and drugged dogs. “They arrive here and Milagros Caninos is perhaps their last chance, or the only one in their life, to know what love is," she explained.
The contest to elect America’s most beloved pet is currently in the quarterfinal round, and it ends on March 26. The competition's winner will appear on the cover of Dogster Magazine and receive a 5,000 dollars (4,684 euros) prize.
"Honestly, it doesn't matter if he wins this contest or not. For us Lemon Pie is a winner, like all the puppies that survive the cruelty of the human being", Ruiz stated.
The sanctuary, which was founded 17 years ago, is the home of 400 dogs.
