USA: Judges postpone sentencing of rapper Tory Lanez in Megan Thee Stallion shooting
A judge at the Los Angeles Superior Court set a new sentencing date on Tuesday, for Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, who has been charged with assault after shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the foot during a dispute in 2020.
Lanez’s defence lawyer David Kenner was seen being surrounded by journalists while leaving the court after the hearing.
“April 10th is the next day. For the motion for a new trial. Okay? Thank you all,” the lawyer was heard explaining to reporters.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty of assault with a firearm, carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm and discharging a firearm with gross negligence after a trial on December 23 last year.
The 30-year-old has been in police custody ever since the verdict. He faces deportation and more than 22 years in prison.
Lanez's legal team is expected to file for a new trial to be heard on April 10, the same day as the new sentencing date
