'The secret? Patience!' - Dozens of couples celebrate lifelong marriage at St Valentine's Basilica in Terni
Around 70 couples celebrated their golden wedding anniversaries, marking 50 years of marriage, in the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni on Sunday.
The ceremony held in one of Italy's most romantic places also marked 60th wedding anniversary for six of the couples.
"What is the secret? Lots of patience. Lots of patience. Life has ups and downs. It is good and evil. It is necessary to face it in life. If everything is beautiful, everything would be too comfortable," said Vittoria.
Couples from Terni, Umbria, Arezzo, Pesaro, Rome, Montreux, and Mexico, accompanied by their children and grandchildren, renewed their vows.
"We have known this Basilica for three or four years. This celebration that they do for couples of 25 years, 50 years, and up to 60 years caught our attention … We are very happy to have been here sharing [this day] with so many couples", said Elia from Mexico, who has been married to Gianni for 50 years.
The festivities were presided over by Bishop Baldassarre Reina of Rome, together with the parish priest of San Valentino, Father Johnson Perumittath.
St Valentine was a former Bishop of Termi and is considered the patron saint of love.
