Syrian Minister of Public Works and Housing Suhail Abdullatif held a press conference on Monday in Damascus to announce that the Syrian government will build 350 housing units for people displaced by the deadly earthquake.
He also mentioned that the government has already provided 250 sheltering spots, including schools, hotels, mosques, and cultural centres.
“Construction companies were required to provide up to 300 prefabricated housing units to shelter the affected people. Prefabricated one or two-room units shall be provided by the construction companies of the Ministry and an engineering company of the Ministry of Defense,” Abdullatif stated.
The minister also detailed that a committee of representatives from the Engineers Association, General Company of Engineering Studies and university experts have checked the safety of over 22,000 buildings in Latakia, 21,627 in Aleppo and 7200 in Hama.
On Monday, February 6, two earthquakes hit Syria and Turkey, devastating several cities across both countries. Many buildings collapsed, with Aleppo and Haman Idlab affected the most in Syria.
At the time of publication, the combined death toll closed to 47,000 twelve days after the devastating earthquake.
