Hundreds of fans and numerous international and German film stars attended the opening ceremony of the 73rd Berlinale Film Festival in Berlin on Thursday.

Footage showed actors and filmmakers at the Red Carpet laid out in front of the Berlinale Palast. Among the German actors were Matthias Schweighöfer and Lars Eidinger, while international stars such as Anne Hathaway and Peter Dinklage could also be spotted.

Berlin's Mayor Franziska Giffey and Minister of State for Culture and Media of Germany Claudia Roth also visited the Berlinale.

The Berlinale is considered one of the most prestigious film festivals in Europe, together with the events in Venice and Cannes. Around 400 films will be projected in different theaters across Berlin until the Golden Bear is awarded to the best movie on 26 February.
