Germany: 'Not a single euro has been spent’ - MPs debate additional state aid for companies

MPs debated the extension of a state aid package for companies in the Bundestag on Friday, in light of the energy crisis that has gripped Europe.

The extended aid package which was announced earlier in the week, aims to grant companies that use energy from pellets and oil heating, additional funds amounting €25 million ($23.4 million). However, it has not been cleared up when and how the funds will reach consumers. "It was Olaf Scholz's promise, it was the government's commitment, it was the announcement by the traffic light coalition - today I see that not a single euro has been spent", stated Andreas Jung, Member of Parliament for CDU/CSU as he commented on the issue.

"Germany is fighting an enormous energy crisis, an energy crisis caused by Vladimir Putin's illegal war in Ukraine. And we at the traffic light - SPD, Greens, and FDP - have acted very committed and very purposeful against this challenge from this crisis", insisted Karsten Klein, from the Free Democrats.

"The real solution to the problem only comes when it is finally understood that the energy transition has failed and must be ended; The real solution to the problem will only come when it is finally understood that further escalation of sanctions [against Russia] is not doing any good", Wolfgang Wiehle, an Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) MP.

The coalition parties, alongside The Left party, voted to transfer the discussion onto the different parliamentary tasks groups, while opposition parties like the CDU/CSU and AfD opposed the motion.
