Syria: Planes carrying humanitarian aid from Iraq and Tunisia arrive in Aleppo
Iraqi and Tunisian planes carrying humanitarian aid and rescue teams arrived at the Aleppo International Airport on Wednesday, after a series of earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria, leaving thousands of victims dead and many others trapped under rubble.
Footage shows tons of supplies containing food, water and medical equipment being offloaded from the planes by military personnel and aid workers.
"We have just received a plane from Tunisia, containing a rescue team to assist and support the efforts of the Aleppo governorate in removing the rubble, recovering the bodies of the martyrs, and searching for the missing, in addition to some food and medical aid to support the work of the mission,” said Abdul Qadir Mawlawi from the Executive Office in Aleppo Governorate.
Also, the plane behind us from the brotherly Republic of Iraq contains 22 tons of foodstuffs, medical supplies and detergents. Therefore, we thank all the efforts of the brotherly and friendly countries,” he added.
Tunisia sent a mission of civil defence personnel, Red Crescent aid workers and a team of doctors, as well as equipment to aid with search and rescue efforts in Aleppo.
At the time of publication, Turkey’s disaster management agency confirmed that 8,500 people have lost their lives. Across Syria, more than 2,500 people are believed to have died in government and opposition-controlled areas.
The World Health Organisation warned that total casualties across both countries could reach 20,000.
