The streets of Zagreb are filling up with mounting piles of litter following a strike by sanitation workers, as seen in footage captured on Wednesday.

Around 400 workers with the Cistoca waste management company went on strike in the Croatian capital on Monday in a show of solidarity with three of their colleagues, who they claim had been dismissed unfairly, according to local media.

The Cistoca employees were sacked after being filmed throwing different types of recyclable waste into one container, sparking outrage from the public and the city’s Mayor, Tomislav Tomasevic.

The striking sanitation workers, united under the Cistoca Union, are demanding that their colleagues be allowed to return to work.

Negotiations between the Cistoca Union and authorities are ongoing.
