Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin claimed that sanctions were bringing Moscow and Tehran closer together, during a press conference in the Iranian capital on Monday.

"The sanctions announced by the US and its satellites against our countries only bring Russia and Iran together," he stated. "We understand that we have to confront them together. When it comes to developing co-operation and relations, we believe it is right to do so based on the principles of mutual respect."

It followed a meeting of the Commission on Co-operation between the State Duma and Iran's parliament.

Volodin also added that he believed Russia and Iran shared the same views on the importance of protecting sovereignty.

"We are against hegemony and believe it is right to unite parliamentarians of all countries to do everything we can to protect the sovereignty of each country," Volodin noted.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the countries had 'common concerns, common views on the regional and international agenda' and should continue to develop their relationship.

The State Duma delegation is on an official visit to Iran from January 22-23, which included the third meeting of the Commission on Co-operation between the State Duma and the Iranian Parliament.

The participants discussed legislative support for trade and economic co-operation in the fields of energy, transport and agriculture, co-operation in the Caspian Sea, regional security and counter-terrorism and extremism.

In addition, Vyacheslav Volodin held talks with Speaker of the Islamic Council of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and President of the Republic Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi.
