Ecuador: Trade unions march in Quito amid national anti-president Lasso protest demanding new labour law

Hundreds of workers took to the streets of Quito on Thursday amid the national protest against the reform of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS) and the policies of Guillermo Lasso’s government.

Footage shows activists marching with flags and banners through the capital's streets. Similar protests have been organised by the Frente Unitario de Los Trabajadores (FUT) across the country.

Among the unions' demands is disagreement with the authorities' desire to transfer pension funds to private companies. FUT president Marcela Arellano has said that IESS cannot be sold because it belongs to the workers.

There is currently no private pension system in Ecuador, so every worker contributes to the IESS.
