Russia: 13 states sign agreement to establish Association for Development of Ice Hockey of Islamic Countries

Thirteen nations have joined the Association for the Development of Hockey in Islamic Countries following an agreement signed in Kazan on Tuesday. The announcement was made on the official website of the Ice Hockey Federation of the Republic of Tatarstan.

Footage shows official representatives of the hockey federations of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Algeria, Oman, Bahrain, Iran, Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkey and the Republic of Tatarstan. The main purpose of the agreement is to promote the sport in Islamic countries.

As a result of the vote, HC Ak Bars President, President of Tatarstan Ice Hockey Federation Nail Maganov was appointed as the Association's President. Aivaz Omorkanov, a council member of the IIHF, was elected Vice President of the Association for the Asian region, while Hamel Al Kubaisi, head of the UAE Winter Sports Federation, was elected Vice President for the Middle Eastern region.

As a result of the agreement, the Association's headquarters will be located in Kazan.

Teams of all the signatory countries took part in the International Ice Hockey Tournament among Islamic nations and the Republic of Tatarstan which is held in Kazan from 13 to 17 January.

Twelve men's and five women's amateur teams are taking part in the tournament. The competition brings together more than 300 athletes and functionaries from 13 countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman, Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan as well as a combined team from Algeria, Morocco and Lebanon.

A gala match involving players from each team was held at Tatneft Arena on Tuesday, followed by the closing ceremony.
