Thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Berlin on Sunday to mark the 104th anniversary of revolutionary socialist Rosa Luxemburg and communist politician Karl Liebknecht.

The protesters were seen marching from the Frankfurt Gate to the monumental memorial to fallen socialists in Friedrichsfelde, where Liebknecht and Luxemburg’s graves lie.

The socialist demonstrators carried signs and banners reading “Peace with Russia and China! Lift all sanctions!” and “100 years of crisis, where is the rebellion” while singing revolutionary songs.

"I have been going to this demonstration since 1969 and I will continue to go in the future. It reminds me of the death, the murder we are going through,” a protester said.

“It is very important to remember what you have to do to avoid war and racism, against fascism, and for the future, that is actually my main reason and I hope many more will come along," she added.

The protesters held a memorial ceremony at the graves of Liebknecht and Luxemburg, placing red flowers on the tombstones of the early 20th-century revolutionary leaders.

Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Paul August Friedrich Liebknecht were the founders of Germany's Communist Party. Both opposed WWI and were killed for their roles in the Spartacist uprising of 1919 by members of the far-right German Freikorps paramilitary.

Since the creation of the German Democratic Republic, socialist and communist sympathisers have held an annual memorial march in their honour.
