BMW’s display at the Tokyo Auto Salon exhibition was the centre of attention, with its huge kidney grille mock-up standing at more than four metres high, as seen in footage from the Makuhari Messe convention centre in Chiba, outside Tokyo, on Friday.
Huge grilles are a traditional feature of the 7 series, the M3 and M4, and the XM, but the look has divided the critics.
While grilles are needed for radiator cooling, modern cars don’t require them to be quite so large and BMW’s designs are associated with style rather than necessity. Media reports have suggested the display is a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment of the light controversy.
