Brazil: 'An irreparable loss' - Thousands bid farewell as Pele’s coffin is carried through Santos
Thousands of fans gathered in Santos on Tuesday to watch the procession carrying football legend Pele’s casket to the Ecumenical Memorial Necropolis cemetery overlooking Santos stadium.
Mourners were seen wearing Santos FC football shirts, while cheering and dancing as they said their final farewells to the three-time World Cup winner. Footage also shows the fire engine carrying the coffin, with a police escort.
"Sometimes it is even funny how we get emotional even without having seen him play, but for those who are from Santos, for those who love Santos, for those who know the history of Pele, it's an irreparable loss," said Paulo, a member of Santos Fan club 'Torcida Jovem'.
Pele, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, died on December 29 at the age of 82, following a battle with colon cancer. A private family burial will take place on Tuesday at Latin America’s first vertical cemetery.
