Iraq: 'A match between brothers' - Iraq defeats Kuwait 1-0 in friendly game in Basra

The Iraqi national team defeated Kuwait in a friendly match at the Olympic Port Stadium in Basra on Friday.

The Iraqi national team player Ali Fayez scored the only goal of the match in the 9th minute.

"This is a match between brothers", said Ahmed Dahim, who came to cheer for the Kuwait team. "The atmosphere was excellent", he added.

Iraqi fan Haider Ghanem said: "The game was sweet and the audience was nice on the Kuwaiti and Iraqi sides. We invite our fans in the Gulf countries to honour us in Basra, Basra is their home at all times."

The match came before the 26th Arab Gulf Cup, which will be held in the Olympic Port Stadium from 6 to 19 January 2023.

Iraq hosted the Gulf Cup for the first time in 1979 in the capital, Baghdad, at Al-Shaab International Stadium, and was crowned the title of the fifth edition at the time.
