Argentina: 'A gift for people' - World Cup winner Messi immortalised in Buenos Aires mural
A local artist from Buenos Aires has immortalised Argentina’s World Cup victory win with a huge mural, depicting captain Lionel Messi lifting the trophy, as seen in footage from the Palermo neighbourhood on Thursday.
"This is the year of World Cup, it belongs to the national team," explained creator, Maxi Bagnasco. "We had to wait for the moment to watch the game, see what photo I wanted, days before I already had everything ready, talked about using the wall, it actually comes out this mural because I wanted to do it and it is a gift for people."
Footage shows Bagnasco putting the finishing touches to his mural with a number of spray cans, working from a smaller version.
"The image was this from the first moment, where he puts on the tunic and raises the cup. I also thought it was nice because it differentiated it from other murals. Some tell me you cannot see much of the light blue-white shirt. But it seems that other images compared him a lot with Maradona," he explained.
Locals are seen taking photos of the creation, while the artist paid tribute to his helpers.
"I work with aerosols. I had an assistant Nicolas, there is a whole team behind this, an assistant, Raul, who always takes me everywhere", he said.
Argentina beat France in the World Cup final last Sunday to lift their third trophy, following victories in 1978 and 1986. 35-year-old Messi himself announced that the game would be his last in the tournament.
