China: Protesters hold vigil for Urumqi fire victims as police stand nearby
Protesters gathered in the streets of Shanghai on Saturday, to hold a vigil for the victims of the Urumqi fire.
The demonstrators commemorated the 10 victims who died on Thursday night. Footage shows dozens of activists walking, with police officers standing nearby.
Some protesters believe the tragedy was exacerbated by COVID-19 lockdown measures at the residential block.
Chinese media reports suggested the area was classified as 'low risk' with those inside allowed to come and go. Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian blamed "forces with ulterior motives" for linking the blaze to pandemic measures.
