The Russian troops prevented a counterattack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the South-Donetsk direction, according to what Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said during his daily briefing in Moscow, Monday.

"In South Donetsk direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine units have tried unsuccessfully to counterattack to regain lost areas near Novomikhailovka, Vladimirovka and Pavlovka. The Armed Forces of Ukraine have failed in an attempt to attack Russian troops towards Novodarovka," said the lieutenant general.

As specified by Konashenkov, 'artillery strikes and the actions of assault groups have halted the Armed Forces of Ukraine units and drove them back to their initial positions'.

The lieutenant general also added that Russian troops destroyed a sabotage and reconnaissance group of the AFU near the village of Dneprovskoe, Kherson region.

"Armed Forces of Ukraine sabotage and reconnaissance group has been eliminated, while attempting to cross to the left (east) bank of the Dnieper River on a boat near Dneprovskoye, Kherson region," the spokesperson stressed out.

At the time of publication, the Ukrainian side has not made any official comments regarding the statements of the Russian Defence Ministry.

However, the daily summary of the General Staff of the AFU reported that the Russian Armed Forces are building defenсes in the Krivoy Rog and Kherson directions, and also striking at the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the right (west) bank of the Dnieper.

"In the Krivoy Rog and Kherson directions, the enemy is creating an echeloned defence system, improving fortification equipment and logistical support of advanced units, and not stopping artillery fire at the positions of our troops and settlements on the right bank of the Dnieper River," reads the message.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements.

Russian troops were sent in, allegedly to defend citizens from attacks by Kiev, as well as to ‘demilitarise’ and 'denazify’ the region. Moscow also urged Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and guarantee that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the action as an invasion, denying allegations of tolerating Nazi organisations. President Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
