Indonesia: 'Extremely relevant development but we are not involved' - Guterres on speculation of Russia-US talks in Ankara

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that his organisation had played no part in any talks between the United States and Russia after media reports suggested the two countries were holding discussions in Ankara while speaking during a press briefing in Bali on Monday.

"There are reports of talks taking place between the US and Russia in Ankara," he was asked by a journalist. "Can you tell us more and is UN involved?"

"In relation to the second question UN is not involved," replied Guterres. "I think it's very positive that US and Russia have talks because it's extremely relevant development in direction of the future. But we are not involved."

Guterres, who was holding the news conference ahead of the G20 summit, also said that his organisation was working to ensure the flow of Russian food and fertilisers. Moscow has claimed that the Black Sea Grain initiative, set up to enable exports from both Ukraine and Russia, was only favouring Kiev.

"We are working to end all obstacles to free flow of Russian food and fertilisers to global markets," said Guterres. "Our engagements with the European Union, United States and United Kingdom has helped to remove many of the impediments to markets access. These products are not subject to sanctions but suffer indirect impact."

The deal itself expires on November 19, with Russia warning that there were no guarantees it would be extended, particularly given its own concerns.

"I’m hopeful that the Black Sea Grain initiative will be renewed because those things are extremely important for today's world," stated Guterres.

He also commented on media reports that the Russian Foreign Minister had been hospitalised on arrival in Bali, a story Moscow rejected as 'fake news'.

"I did not know what happened to Minister Lavrov. I wish him the best possible recovery and I hope tomorrow it will be possible to meet," said the UN Secretary-General.

The G20 summit of Heads of State and Government takes place on November 15-16.
