Israeli police stepped up security in Jerusalem’s Old City ahead of a series of Jewish holidays, starting with Rosh Hashanah, or Jewish New Year, on Sunday evening

Two thousand police officers and soldiers were deployed in the city to protect local residents and tourists, according to District Commander Doron Turgeman.

Thousands are expected to travel to Jerusalem for Rosh Hashanah (September 25-27), Yom Kippur ('Day of Atonement', October 4-5) and Sukkot ('Harvest Festival', October 9-16).
