China: Chongqing kicks off COVID-19 mass testing under scorching sun
Amid a heatwave, citizens and visitors of Chongqing, in southwestern China, were demanded to get preventively tested for COVID-19, on Wednesday. Hundreds of people were waiting in lines under the sun to register for the tests. Demanded by the municipal authorities, aiming to control a new outbreak of the infection, the measure is mandatory for workers and users of public services.
The main goal, according to the Chongqing Municipal Leading Group for Epidemic Prevention and Control, is to thoroughly investigate hidden infections, and cut off the chain of epidemic transmission as soon as possible. Applying the nucleic acid screening method, the testing is carried out free of charge in the central urban area of Chongqing, a municipality with over 16 million inhabitants.
From the second day of the current measure onwards, without a test, citizens are not allowed to take part in dinners, meetings or business events. Travels and public spaces will also sanction the not screened persons. Public institutions can adopt flexible homework schemas.
Considering the impact of the high temperatures registered these days, around 42 C (107 Fahrenheit) degrees, the sampling time is arranged from 06:00 to 12:00 AM, and after 06:00 PM. The tests are also organised and carried out locally and nearby by each community.
