
Uzbekistan: 18 died, more than 200 injured during protests in Nukus - General Prosecutor's Office
Prosecutor of the Uzbek Prosecutor General's Office department Abror Mamatov, said that 18 residents died during protests in Nukus, speaking at a briefing in Tashkent on Monday.
"The unrest left 243 people, including 38 law enforcement officers, injured to varying degrees of severity. As a result of serious injuries, 18 city residents died," the prosecutor claimed.
In turn, Uzbek National Guard spokesperson Davron Dzhumanazarov said the injured were hospitalised; 94 of them are being treated in hospital.
"As a result of the July 1 and 2 mass unrest, 243 citizens were hospitalised with various injuries. First aid was provided to 149 of them. A total of 94 patients are currently being treated at hospitals. Some of them are in serious condition," Dzhumanazarov noted.
A National Guard spokesperson also reported the detention of 516 citizens.
"On July 1 and 2, 516 citizens detained at the site of the unrest were handed over to the police department of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. They are under investigation, some of them were released after administrative actions were implemented," Dzhumanazarov added.
On Saturday, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev decreed a state of emergency in Karakalpakstan until August 2.
According to the Uzbek Interior Ministry's press service, a demonstration was held in Nukus over potential constitutional amendments. Among some 200 proposed amendments are those excluding Karakalpakstan's sovereign status and its right to secede from the country.
"To prevent disruption of public order and stop citizens from committing various offences, law enforcement forces and resources were deployed," the ministry said.
On Saturday, a joint statement by the Karakalpakstan parliament, government and Interior Ministry was issued on the detention by law enforcement agencies of a group of rioters who allegedly attempted to seize power in the region.
On Sunday, in Nukus Mirziyoyev suggested that the constitution should not be amended regarding Karakalpakstan's sovereignty.
