Clashes between Israeli security forces and mourners carrying the coffin containing the body of slain journalist Shirin Abu Akleh took place before her funeral in Jerusalem's Old City.

Thousands of Palestinians gathered for a memorial service for the Al Jazeera reporter before her body is taken to Mount Zion Protestant cemetery for burial.

Some reports from the ground suggest that Israeli police charged mourners when they insisted on carrying the coffin of Abu Akleh on their shoulders instead of using an ambulance for its transport.

Israeli forces have arrested at least four people during the incident, according to local sources.

Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian journalist with over two decades of experience, was killed on Wednesday in the city of Jenin, in the northern part of the West Bank.

Palestinian authorities claim that the Israeli military shot her in the head.

Israeli military suggested that Shireen might have been killed by stray fire from Palestinians, and Defence minister Benny Gantz announced an investigation.

[Update: earlier version of the headline mistakenly stated that the country was Israel. In fact, the footage was filmed in Palestinian Territory]
