State of Palestine: Tensions rise as Israeli police intervene during funeral of killed Al-Jazeera journalist
Israeli security forces cracked down on mourners carrying the coffin of killed journalist Shireen Abu Akleh ahead of her funeral in the Old City of Jerusalem.
Thousands of Palestinians gathered for the funeral service of the Al Jazeera reporter before her body is taken to the Mount Zion Protestant Cemetery to be buried.
Some reports from the ground suggest that Israeli police charged against mourners when they insisted in carrying the coffin of Abu Akleh on their shoulders instead of using an ambulance for its transport.
"Hundreds of lawbreakers took advantage of the funeral, shouted incitement and threw stones from the hospital plaza,” said the Israeli police to justify its intervention.
Israeli forces have arrested at least four people during the incident, according to local sources.
Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian journalist with over two decades of experience, was killed on Wednesday in the city of Jenin, in the northern part of the West Bank.
Palestinian authorities claim that the Israeli military shot her in the head.
Israeli military suggested that Shireen might have been killed by stray fire from Palestinians, and Defence minister Benny Gantz announced an investigation.
