The Special Penitentiary Service of the Georgian Justice Ministry transported ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili from the Rustavi prison to the Vivamed clinic in Tbilisi for a medical examination, on Thursday.

Footage shows ambulances and penitentiary service cars driving up to the prison at night.

In the early morning, the car with Saakashvili left the prison's territory, accompanied by a reinforced police convoy, and later arrived at a medical facility in Tbilisi.

The imprisoned politician got out of the car and waved to people, then he entered the clinic.

Earlier on Tuesday, Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze announced an agreement to transfer Saakashvili from prison to the capital for a medical examination.

Saakashvili was detained on October 1 upon his return to Georgia. Earlier, the ex-president was put on the national wanted list in cases of membership in the club of the banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of deputy Valeria Gelashvili, according to the terms; he was sentenced in absentia to three and six years of freedom, respectively.

Saakashvili is also accused of seizing the state's border and brutally dispersing the protesters.

In jail, the ex-president went on a hunger strike, calling himself a political prisoner. Supporters of Saakashvili continue to collect signatures under a petition addressed to the Georgian president and the government's claim to release the former leader of the state.

Saakashvili’s supporters continue to bag subscriptions to a petition addressed to the President and the Georgian government demanding the former leader’s release.
