Latvia: Authorities remove flowers from Liberators' Monument in Riga, citizens bring new ones
Residents of Riga brought flowers to the Liberators Monument on Tuesday, after authorities removed all the flowers laid at the memorial on May 9.
The Russian Embassy in Latvia defined the authorities' decision as 'the limitless rudeness'.
"At dawn, fresh flowers were raked away with a tractor like old garbage. They were afraid to see the scale of the memory and gratitude of Riga's residents to soldiers-liberators," said the diplomatic office.
Footage shows hundreds of people gathering at the monument with fresh flowers and candles.
During the event, multiple people were detained.
According to a police report released on their Twitter official account, some people were using St George's ribbons, prohibited in the country.
In November 2021, Latvian parliament officially banned the use of Ribbon of St.George at public, entertainment and memorial events, as well as meetings, processions and pickets.
