Bulgaria: Immortal Regiment march faces counter-demo in Sofia
Hundreds of people participated in Sofia’s Immortal Regiment march on Monday, honouring their relatives and those that fought in World War II on the 77nd anniversary of Victory Day.
Participants were seen holding Russian and Bulgarian flags, as well as portraits of relatives who died during the war.
The march started form the "Unknown Soldier" monument and ended up at the Soviet Army monument. There, dozens of counter-protesters who gathered to demonstrate against the march argued with the ‘Immortal regiment’ participants before being removed by the police.
Eleonora Mitrofanova, ambassador of Russia to Bulgaria, gave a speech in front of the monument condemning nazism.
"It's evident that the victims and the destinies destroyed weren't enough to learn the lesson of the inadmissibility of nazism and all the forms of discrimination against people from other nationality,” she said.
